A Quick Look at the Sun Home Equinox

Rated by our testers as the best infrared sauna for home use, this is no regular hot box. The Sun Home Equinox can reach a maximum temperature of 165 degrees—on the very high end for infrared models—and has a host of features that set it apart from other profiles, even at this same price point. 

Top callouts include the removable benches, which allow for additional room for exercising or hot yoga (couldn’t be me, but you do you), and built-in chromotherapy lighting, which uses specific wavelengths of light to treat certain psychological and physical health conditions⁵. Research is limited⁶ on whether or not it works, but the soft, colorful lighting can be a nice touch, regardless.

Before You Buy

• There are some infrared sauna dangers, so make sure you are a good fit for this type of recovery discipline prior to purchase.
• The max capacity on the Equinox is three people (we tested the two-person model), but there is a four-person model—the Eclipse—that offers both far infrared and red light therapy.
• The Equinox is warrantied against the cabinetry and heaters for seven years (controls for three), and you can buy additional accident protection for events not covered by the warranty for up to four years.

Is the Sun Home Equinox Worth It?

For me, as a professional gear analyst with a vendetta against hyperconsumerism, the question of whether or not something is “worth it” is always a tough one—especially when the price is north of $7,000. I recognize that saunas are not something everyone is lucky enough to invest in, and I never want to make people feel like they are missing out on something they don’t really need. 

All that said, if I am going to say a four-figure sauna is worth it, the Sun Home Equinox would be the one I, and our product testers, recommend. Based on the available scientific evidence, if you get enough use out of your sauna, the benefits you’ll enjoy can justify the cost. We could all use a little more sleep, a little less stress, and quicker workout recovery. 

Plus, the robust build quality and luxury features on this sauna can make every session feel like a visit to a luxury wellness retreat. As Lindsay puts it, “You can find cheaper saunas on Amazon, but in terms of quality, they just don’t meet the mark that this sauna does.”

Sun Home Equinox Specs

Experience Using the Sun Home Equinox

Lindsay has used the Sun Home Equinox extensively in our GGR fitness warehouse. Time and time again, she returns to the Equinox because of its incredible ambient lighting, “killer” sound system, and comfortable interior benches. Not to mention, this sauna heats to a higher degree than most other infrared saunas, which allows for a more intense session in the recommended maximum of 15-minute intervals (learn more about how long to stay in a sauna). 

Footprint and Portability

Lindsay says the Equinox has a “pretty standard footprint for a two-person sauna.” It’s definitely not a portable sauna, she calls out, and that’s clear from the dimensions and product weight. The Equinox weighs 520 pounds and measures 51 inches long by 46 inches wide by 78 inches high. Still, it’s well within benchmark standards for a two-person sauna, so it earns 4 out of 5 points in this category. 

Durability and Construction

The build quality of the Sun Home Equinox is something most people are not likely to be able to DIY. In fact, it’s one of the major positive performance points for this product. Lindsay rates the construction a 5 out of 5, saying, “We have tested this one so many times and the construction on this is solid. Even after moving it around the building and having multiple people use it, it has no issues.”

Made from kiln-dried natural eucalyptus wood, the Sun Home Equinox is resistant to warping and rot, as well as insects. Sun Home also utilizes materials low in volatile organic compounds⁷ (VOCs) that may pose a threat to personal health. 

Sun Home also claims that the heaters will last for 50,000 hours of use. While we haven’t had the pleasure of using this sauna for that long (yet!), we do believe that the quality of the other components is a good indication of the heater quality.

Heat Performance

“The four far-infrared heaters are the star of the show with this sauna,” Lindsay tells me. “This sauna heats up to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. For me personally, this is the hottest infrared sauna that I’ve ever tested.” 

Most infrared saunas heat to around 140 or 150 degrees, with 160 being the high end. The max temp of 165 degrees puts the Sun Home Equinox among the highest-performing infrared saunas in terms of heating power. 

It heats up quickly, too. “The saunas from Sun Home Saunas heat up faster than a lot of other saunas I’ve tried, in about 10 minutes,” Lindsay tells me. All in all, the Equinox earns a perfect score of 5 points for performance.

This heating power comes from the four far-infrared heating panels plus the two full-spectrum infrared heaters in the front of the build. One thing to note, Lindsay points out, is that there’s an auto-shutoff feature for safety. Once the inside temperature reaches its max, the panels automatically turn off. 

The Ergonomics

This sauna comfortably fits two people, Lindsay says. The bench seats are removable so you have more wiggle room for hot yoga or simply lying in Shavasana and relaxing. 

“The bench seat feels deep and is comfortable to sit on,” Lindsay says, and at 20.2 inches deep, the seat is “way more comfortable to use, especially if you are a taller person. I mean, this was easily like the most comfortable bench.”

She also notes that although the back rest doesn’t offer any sort of contour, she didn’t have any issues with it since she prefers a straight back rest. If you need lumbar support, you may want to look into some sort of portable seat or backrest, or this may not be the right sauna for you.

Technology Benefits and Conveniences

This wouldn’t be a complete Sun Home Equinox review without mentioning the tech specs and extra features. Lindsay calls the Equinox the “sauna with the killer speakers,” and being that Sun Home utilizes Blaupunkt speakers—the same kind used in Porsche vehicles—we’d all have to agree. “This sound system actually got me super excited,” Lindsay says. “It was fantastic. It goes super loud, but the sound quality was also really clear.” 

We also have to comment on the chromotherapy lighting, which Lindsay says is a great addition to the overall ambiance. You can switch between various hues of blue, red, green, and yellow, and there’s a remote control so you can do it without breaking your zen. Even if you’re not convinced in chromotherapy’s posited healing properties⁵, the different lighting can be a fun addition. 

This isn’t the most high-tech sauna out there, but these components really elevate the experience, so Lindsay gives it a 4-out-of-5 rating for features.

If you’re looking for an alternative sauna to the Equinox, we’ve been fans of the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna since it arrived at our testing facility. The builds are comparable in price and function, but there are a few differences to note. The Heavenly Heat sauna is a much tighter squeeze for two people, measuring smaller by about 4 inches in width, 5 inches in depth, and 3 inches in height. It’s certainly still doable for two, though. The Heavenly Heat sauna also weighs substantially less at 320 pounds compared to the Equinox’s 520 pounds. 

Both heat to 165 degrees Fahrenheit and have EMF-reducing properties to help protect against electromagnetic field exposure. The Heavenly Heat sauna offers a more robust warranty on the cabin (10 years compared to Sun Home’s seven), though less coverage is granted for the heaters (six years compared to Sun Home’s seven).

Tester Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC says of the Heavenly Heat sauna, “I feel like that’s a pretty decent price. That’s considering the high-quality build, Canadian hemlock wood, and low-EMF and ELF sauna heaters.”

Customer Experience 

You’ll be well taken care of as a Sun Home customer. The brand offers a seven-year warranty on the cabinetry and heaters—the most important components—and a three-year warranty on the control system. Additional protection for accidents that aren’t covered by the warranty, such as spills, is available for an additional cost for up to four years. 

Sun Home also offers financing, which we love to see for expensive products like this. Those who qualify can enjoy payments as low as $240 per month with 0% APR. (Don’t forget to check if your purchase is FSA- or HSA-eligible, too!) 

Finally, Sun Home allows for a 30-day return window, but the sauna must be unused and in its original packaging. You will also be responsible for a 25% restocking fee and outbound shipping. You won’t be refunded for your inbound shipping, either. The return policy isn’t the most lax, but it’s understandable given the nature of the product. Taken all together, Sun Home earns 5 out of 5 points for customer experience. 

Ordering and Assembling the Sun Home Equinox

Lindsay cites no issues with assembly, but notes that the process is, by nature, a bit cumbersome. She gives it 3.5 out of 5 points, saying, “It will take two people, but the instructions were clear. It isn’t a complicated sauna to build; it just takes some time since it’s a bigger piece of equipment.” The delivery was easy, she says, and came with all parts well-protected in a big wooden box. 

Customer Reviews

As of this writing, the Equinox has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars on the Sun Home website, based on 72 customer reviews.”I can’t be more pleased with our purchase,” notes one positive customer response. “I always do a lot of research before I purchase anything. The sales staff was very professional and helpful. We use our sauna every day! We love it!”

While reviews are generally positive, there are some instances where complaints stem from the delivery process, which can be out of Sun Home’s hands and more assigned to individual parcel handlers. “We had a communication issue with delivery. Ordered in early April and delivered June 18. Boxes were well-packed. Once all the boxes were unpacked, sorted and staged, it took about an hour to assemble,” one reviewer writes. 

Final Verdict of Our Sun Home Equinox Review

Priced around $7,500, many may balk at the price tag on this sauna. We hear you—but hear our tester out. “It’s more expensive than the average two-person sauna, but it feels worth it to me considering the quality, warranty, and performance of this sauna to spend a little more,” Lindsay concludes.

Something of a sauna savant, GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele sat inside the Solara for several sweaty sessions so she could give us a full-spectrum review. Measuring 63 inches high, 37 inches deep, and 35 inches wide, the Solara features a compact design that may give you pause about comfortability and functionality. However, Lindsay poured some cold water on that theory. 

“I actually like the idea of a smaller sauna for a home gym owner because it allows you to fit it basically anywhere,” she explains. 

Meanwhile, one of our other product testers—who is 6-feet tall—was pleasantly surprised with their Solara experience. 

“I thought I would be very cramped inside of it, but it was actually quite enjoyable,” they note, rating the footprint and portability at a perfect 5 out of 5. “The only downside is that you cannot extend your legs, which I always do in saunas. However, the dimensions are space-saving, and I can definitely see this living in anyone’s training space without much hassle.”

Earning a strong construction score of 4 out of 5, the Solara is made with Canadian hemlock—a highly rated sauna wood that does not get hot to the touch. 

“It basically doesn’t absorb that heat,” Lindsay says. “You can comfortably sit back on the bench and not feel hot wood on your back while you’re trying to relax.” 

The Solara has six ultra-low EMF (electromagnetic field) heating panels that surround the interior, plus a reflective glass door for extra privacy. We also appreciate that it ships in four pre-assembled panels with pre-installed clips, allowing you to get everything set up in roughly 30 minutes. Overall, the Solara has an attractive, modern design with a fully black exterior that contrasts well with some of the interior’s natural wood elements.

The SaunaBox Solara is packed full of user-friendly features that support muscle recovery, relaxation, and a host of other health benefits. We rated it at a 4 out of 5 in this category, with one of our product testers noting that the controls “were accessible and easy to use.”

“They may not be JBL-quality speakers, but they’re really good,” Lindsay says. “The Bluetooth connected easily and I was able to play my music loudly.” 

Performance

The most critical component of a sauna is its heater, and thankfully, the Solara is equipped with a high-quality system that earned a perfect 5-out-of-5 score from our squad. 

“Minutes after turning it on, the heat rose to over 130 degrees,” one of our product testers reported. 

Capable of reaching 150 degrees Fahrenheit, you can control the Solara via a mobile app. Although it won’t get as hot as a traditional sauna, some folks may prefer the less-intense heat of an infrared sauna. 

“If you are looking for a one-person infrared sauna that has near-, mid-, and far-heating capabilities, comes with red light therapy, and is comfortable to use, this is probably my favorite one that I have tested,” Lindsay adds.

The Solara earns a 3.5 out of 5 for customer experience—a solid but unspectacular mark that stems largely from SaunaBox’s short one-year warranty. Based on our research, the average infrared sauna has a substantially longer coverage period (five years), so this is a disappointing drawback. 

In addition, SaunaBox offers a 30-day return policy, which is on par for the industry. That said, there are some parameters to be mindful of before beginning a claim. To be eligible for a refund or store credit, your item must be unused, in the same condition that you received it, and in the original packaging. This is a pretty restrictive policy that essentially means you best be sure the Solara is the right fit for you before you step inside.

The Morgan Barrel, which may also be marketed as the “Pinnacle,” is a four-person barrel sauna and one of Almost Heaven’s best-selling electric saunas. When you order your sauna, you can also customize many of the features to your preferences—a unique capability that we love to see.

Customization options include the wood type (Rustic Red Cedar or Onyx), the door shape, added windows, and what type of electric heater you want. However, it’s worth pointing out that this particular model can’t be used with a wood-burning heater.

For this review, our testers were Caine Wilkes, OLY, CNC, USAW-L1, a GGR Senior Staff Writer and Olympian, and the owner of the gym he trains at, Sean Rigsby, CSCS. Sean has had this sauna in his gym for several years, which means plenty of athletes have used it, allowing Sean and Caine to truly assess its performance and durability over an extended period of time. 

Overall, Caine was impressed with the quality of this Almost Heaven barrel sauna, especially in terms of its durability and performance.

“I’ve used this sauna on and off since it arrived at the gym about three years ago,” says Caine. “It’s nothing fancy, but it performs extremely well and has held up over repeated use by multiple gym members.”

If you’re looking for the latest infrared sauna with the fancy bells and whistles, this isn’t it. However, if you’re looking for a classic dry sauna with a beautiful design that’s sturdy and reliable, this can be an excellent choice.

Delivery and Setup

Any four-person sauna is going to be bulky, and when it comes to the delivery and setup, we give this one 3 out of 5 stars. 

According to Sean Rigsby, who bought and assembled this sauna, it’s a bit of a hassle. Sean notes that the instruction manual isn’t specific to the Morgan Barrel model and is more geared toward generic barrel sauna assembly. It left a lot up to interpretation, and with the number of wood panels used in the assembly, it certainly slowed things down.

Many larger saunas use this DIY assembly approach, but this is something to keep in mind if you’re not very handy with tools. If you’d rather not spend hours in construction, it may be best to opt for a sauna offering professional installation or a lighter, more portable profile requiring minimal assembly.

Construction

The Almost Heaven Morgan Barrel’s construction is impressive, earning 4 out of 5 stars. Of course, you can customize many of the components, so your experience may vary, but we’re impressed with the build quality of our testing sample. 

“It uses ball-and-socket lumber held together by stainless steel bands and fasteners,” explains Caine. “It’s been at the gym for a few years now and hasn’t had issues with durability, although the bench does creak as I sit down. Granted, I’m a big guy, but I’ve also sat in saunas that haven’t creaked.”

Footprint and Portability

Let’s face it—a 685-pound sauna isn’t meant to be portable, so we’re only going to score the footprint of this barreled profile, which earns 4 out of 5 stars. 

This four-person sauna has dimensions of 72 inches wide by 72 inches long by 77 inches tall, but more importantly, it’s spacious on the inside, and Sean and Caine report that it comfortably seats four users. We’ve tested other saunas that claim to seat four users but feel very cramped, even with only two or three athletes inside. So, we give this one high marks, docking a single point due to its heavy weight and lack of portability. 

Performance

The heating performance is where the Morgan Barrel truly shines, earning a perfect 5-out-of-5 rating in the category. 

Caine and Sean report that they only need to give it about 30 minutes to heat up, and the sauna can reach its maximum temp of 190 degrees Fahrenheit with ease thanks to the powerful sauna heater. Caine also noted that if you put water on the stones and wait a bit, it can reach temperatures above 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

As with any sauna, opening the door can let some heat escape, but if you keep it closed, it retains heat exceptionally well, showcasing its impressive insulating qualities.

For additional features, we give this 3 out of 5 stars. It’s basic, but it gets the job done well, and after years of regular use, it’s still working effectively. There aren’t any fancy, modern touches like LED lighting or Wi-Fi integration for remote temperature control, but it’s still a great choice for reliable sauna use.

Caine notes that the extra accessories are very basic, saying, “It comes with a bucket and ladle for pouring water over stones, and a thermometer attached to the wall. The sauna also has two holes that can be used to help lower the temperature, if needed, but there aren’t any other fancy features.”

Value

Even though it’s expensive, we feel the value is high given the Morgan Barrel’s continued performance and durability, and we give it 4 out of 5 stars for the category. 

It costs over $8,000 if you pay the full retail price, but it’s often marked down to around $5,000, based on our research. Sean also bought his sauna at Costco, where it was even more affordable. 

There are more affordable sauna options on the market, sure, but this one has outstanding performance and durability, along with spacious interior dimensions that can comfortably seat four users.

The Thermowood Mini-Cube Sauna from Redwood Outdoors is a compact two-person outdoor sauna, made for tight spaces or urban backyards. The Thermowood used is heat-treated Scandinavian softwood made to be resistant to cracking, warping, mildew, and insects.

If you’re in the market for a wooden outdoor sauna, but don’t need a large four-person unit, you may want to consider the Redwood Outdoors Duo Sauna instead. 

As the name suggests, it’s built for two users and has both a smaller footprint and a lower price tag. 

We’ve used Redwood’s larger outdoor sauna and were extremely impressed with the performance. As such, we expect the smaller Duo sauna to perform similarly. Both the Almost Heaven and Redwood Outdoors saunas provide a dry sauna experience, and unfortunately, both have a rather difficult home assembly process, but once assembled, you’re good to go. 

If you’re looking for a well-built, high-performing traditional sauna, you can’t go wrong with either option. The Almost Heaven Morgan Barrel can be best for those who need the additional space, while the Redwood Outdoors Duo Sauna may be more ideal for those who only need room for two.

Its standout feature is the 1-horsepower chiller, which can deliver faster cooling than most comparable models that typically use 0.5- or 0.75-HP chiller units. 

The easy-to-assemble system includes a 20-micron filtration unit, Bluetooth-connected app control for setting the water temperatures, and transport wheels—none of which you get with the Standard bundle. Plus, the Ultimate Pro chiller offers heating capabilities, which can be a nice bonus that adds even more value.

That said, there are a few drawbacks to consider. While the chiller is powerful, it’s also noticeably loud, making it less ideal for indoor use. This ice barrel’s inflatable PVC construction can also lose shape over time and can be prone to small leaks with frequent use, contributing to its average construction and durability scores. Additionally, folks who deal with colder outdoor temperatures and conditions will need to take extra precautions to help prevent freezing. According to the brand, the system shouldn’t be stored below 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of the Nordik Recovery Cold Tub’s major advantages is its portability. Tipping the scales at just 77 pounds (35 kilograms) when dry, this inflatable model is much easier to transport and reposition than traditional tubs that can weigh triple or quadruple that amount. Lindsay also states that the included backpack-style carrying case and compact footprint make this tub an ideal choice for active individuals who need to move or store their cold tub between uses. We rate the portability at a perfect 5 out of 5. 

Meanwhile, the Nordik Recovery Tub’s compact footprint can make it more suitable for a range of different environments. Whether you carve out some space in your garage, patio, or basement, you should have little trouble fitting it into your setup. Compared to bulkier cold plunge systems that require dedicated installation or permanent placement, this footprint-friendly tub is much more space-efficient. 

Delivery and Setup

Another area where this tub shines is the delivery and setup process. Lindsay gives Nordik Recovery a score of 4 out of 5 here, along with plenty of praise for its fast delivery and effortless assembly. The entire process took her roughly 20 minutes from unboxing to inflation (not including the time to fill the tub with water).

“This is incredibly easy to assemble, and everything that you need comes with your order,” Lindsay says. “Everything is included—even the pump to blow up the air-filled tub, the hoses, and the connection fittings.”

This simple plug-and-play approach is a huge advantage for novices eager to reap some cold plunge benefits, or those who don’t consider themselves particularly handy. You don’t need a bunch of tools or have to make your way through complicated setup steps, and the system is compatible with standard electrical outlets, too. Overall, the combination of fast shipping, clear instructions, and complete packaging makes this one of the easiest cold tubs to get up and running.

Durability and Construction

At first glance, the Nordik Recovery Ice Bath looks well-made for an inflatable plunge tub. Its military-grade PVC shell feels rugged enough to handle repeated use, and the Ultimate Pro bundle includes nice aesthetic touches like a fitted lid and reinforced seams. 

However, as Lindsay points out, looks can be deceiving. While the materials appear high-quality, she poured some cold water on that assumption. “We already have a small leak in the side of the inflatable tub that we are constantly having to refill with air,” she explains. “We do move this around a lot, but still—that happened pretty quickly.”

This leaking experience highlights one of the major drawbacks of inflatable cold tubs in that they can’t match the structural integrity of solid, traditional cold plunges. Lindsay also observed that the tub began to bow outward after about two weeks of use, which negatively impacts the appearance and functionality.

The cover still fits, but that loss of shape can leave room for leaves, dust, and debris to slip into the water more easily. Overall, we give the Nordik Recovery Tub a 3-out-of-5 rating for construction and durability, noting that it won’t deliver anywhere near the same ruggedness as its hard-shell counterparts.

Ergonomics

Despite its oval shape, the Nordik tub doesn’t accommodate tall people very well. As Lindsay puts it, “This tub does feel small. I’m almost 5-feet, 5-inches and I had a hard time feeling like my whole body was able to be immersed under the water all at once.” 

“Either my shoulders were popping out, or even my knees were slightly popping out,” she continues. “So, if you are taller than that, this might not be a good tub for you unless you are prepared to just huddle up in the fetal position underneath the water.”

Conveniences

Whether you go for the Compact Pro or Ultimate Pro bundle, you’ll get a powerful 1-HP chiller—a huge bonus for a tub of this type. In our experience, most inflatable systems use a 0.5- or 0.75-HP chiller, which can take significantly longer to reach the desired temperature. However, the Nordik’s chiller can cool water down to 37 degrees Fahrenheit in roughly four to five hours (a strong performance for an inflatable setup).

“For an inflatable tub to come along with a 1-horsepower chiller at this price point is actually really good,” Lindsay emphasizes.

The Ultimate Pro chiller can also heat water up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, giving you the versatility for both cold plunging and hot soaking. While Lindsay doubts it actually reaches that high, it’s a nice option to have. The chiller includes a 20-micron filtration system designed to catch sand, rust, and small debris to help keep the water clean between draining protocols. Plus, you can set the water temperature via the Smart Life app, allowing you to prepare the tub ahead of your scheduled soak. 

While the chiller does well at cooling and heating the water, Lindsay has two callouts. First, the chiller only measures the temperature in Celsius, which she found frustrating since most folks know Fahrenheit ranges. She also warns that the chiller is “incredibly noisy” when running, so it’s not ideal for bedrooms or quiet indoor spaces where you want to minimize distractions. Overall, we rate the Nordik Recovery Cold Tub at 4 out of 5 for conveniences and features. 

Draining and Cleaning

Nordik Recovery suggests different cold plunge maintenance protocols depending on the exact setup of your tub (tub only, with a chiller and filter, or with a chiller, filter, and external ozone system). 

When using just the inflatable ice bath by itself, start by filling it to the max water line with clean, filtered water and add about one-third of a bottle of Nordik’s water treatment solution to help keep the water balanced and clean. Every couple of weeks, wipe down the interior with a damp cloth, keep the surrounding area tidy, and always cover the bath when it’s not in use to block out debris. Monthly, inspect the tub for any wear and tear and replace the water regularly, typically at least once a month or more often if the water becomes cloudy or dirty. When you do change the water, drain it fully, clean the surfaces with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, refill with filtered water, and re-add the water treatment solution.

For setups that include a Nordik chiller and external filter, the initial fill process is the same as the bath-only setup, and the water treatment solution is still recommended. Bi-weekly care involves not only wiping down the interior and keeping the area clean, but also regularly inspecting and cleaning or replacing the external filter to prevent buildup. Aim for filter replacements every two to three weeks. Monthly checks should include scanning the bath for potential issues and replacing the water every couple of months. When it comes time to refresh the water, in addition to draining and cleaning the tub, you should also clean the chiller. Remove the dirty filter and run a bottle of Nordik Chiller Cleanser through the system for a few hours to help clear internal components before refilling and treating the water.

If your setup also includes an ozone sanitation system along with the chiller and filter, initial filling and bi-weekly surface care remain the same, as do regular filter inspections. Rather than monthly water changes, though, the recommendation is to replace the water approximately every three months, unless frequent use or signs of cloudiness call for more frequent changes. For deep cleaning, drain the bath, clean all interior and exterior surfaces, and add a bottle of chiller cleanser into the bath before running both the chiller and ozone system for a few hours. This helps purify the system’s plumbing and components. After cleaning, refill with fresh water, add a treatment solution, and you’re ready to go.

Value

Lindsay has mixed thoughts on the value of the Nordik Recovery Ice Tub. “My opinion on inflatable cold tubs, in general, is that I just don’t think they’re worth it. We have had inflatables at home and there always seems to be problems. What I would do if I were you is I would actually probably just save extra money and buy a legit cold tub if that’s something that’s important to you.”

“My overall thoughts on this are that it’s kind of small, it’s kind of loud, and I don’t like that we’ve already got a leak in the side of the tub,” Lindsay continues. “My positive notes are that it’s at a really good price point and I do think that the filtration system is actually pretty good. And it does come with a 1 horsepower chiller, so it’s kind of a mixed bag for me.” As such, we give this Nordik ice tub a conservative 3 out of 5 for overall value.

Customer Experience

Nordik Recovery earns strong praise from customers for a straightforward, user-friendly experience. Like many manufacturers, the company offers a 30-day return policy for customers who are unsatisfied with their purchase. However, that comes with a major caveat. The product must be returned in its original packaging, including the original shipping box. 

“I think that is a huge upfront callout,” Lindsay notes. “If I didn’t keep the box, I would have no ability to return it.” 

That said, we do appreciate that Nordik Recovery includes a two-year warranty on both its inflatable tubs and chillers, along with a one-year warranty for accessories. The warranty protects against defects in materials and workmanship but does not cover normal wear and tear, damage from improper use, or exposure to freezing conditions.

You can order the Nordik Recovery Ice Bath directly on the company website. First, you’ll have to select which package you want: Just the tub, the Standard chiller bundle, or the Ultimate Pro chiller bundle. If you choose the Ultimate Pro chiller, you also get a free portable sauna that’s valued at $600. This promotion is valid only with the Ultimate Pro bundle.

Both are inflatable, easy to set up, and built for full-body immersion wherever you’ve got the space. The key difference? While the Inergize tub is engineered to handle both ends of the temperature spectrum, you’ll need to upgrade to Nordik’s Ultimate Pro chiller to unlock hot-and-cold versatility. 

The Inergize, on the other hand, is more of an all-in-one setup featuring built-in heating and cooling modes, app controls, and a four-stage filtration system that helps minimize maintenance requirements. The Ultimate Pro chiller package provides the most versatility (in our opinion), paving the way for frigid cold plunges or relaxing hot tub sessions.

A Quick Look at the Plunge Air

The Plunge Air (formerly known as the Plunge Evolve Air) is an inflatable tub from Plunge, a company that specializes in recovery-minded equipment like cold plunges, saunas, chillers, and accessories. 

It’s the most affordable option in the Plunge lineup due to its inflatable design and compact dimensions. Unlike solid cold plunges constructed from steel or acrylic, the Plunge Air can be deflated and stored, if needed, making it a great choice for users who are tight on space or frequently on the road. 

Given the amount of water required to fill this, we don’t foresee most users needing to regularly drain and store the tub. Still, compared to traditional plunges, it’s much more portable, and we aren’t complaining about the cost, especially compared to some of the more high-end options. 

It’s also available with or without a chiller, so if you’d prefer to save a significant chunk of money and simply use your own ice, you can do so without much challenge. We prefer the conveniences offered through the chiller, but it’s nice that Plunge allows you to purchase the tub by itself. Overall, we’re very impressed with the Plunge Air, especially given its more approachable price (compared to other options) and inflatable design. Experience Using the Plunge Air

To properly test the Plunge Air before writing this review, several of our team members had the opportunity to use it. Pete Nastasi, CPT, CNC, had the Plunge Air shipped to his house to thoroughly test while writing his Plunge Evolve Series review, while GGR’s Director of Content, Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC, had the opportunity to test this plunge at our central testing facility. 

Pete found that he was able to quickly set up his inflatable tub, and while he didn’t time it, Plunge claims that it only takes 15 minutes to set it up. Overall, he was impressed with the experience, especially for an inflatable tub. 

Nicole was also satisfied with her plunging experience, particularly regarding the chiller unit. She notes that the Wi-Fi-connected chiller allows for easy troubleshooting if there are any issues. Plus, it’s powerful, helping the water reach lower temps fairly quickly. 

We get it—soaking in near-freezing temperatures isn’t everyone’s idea of a relaxing afternoon, but as far as ice baths go, we found the Plunge Air to be a convenient, powerful option for making the experience worthwhile. Now we’ll take a closer look at the individual categories we use to score and rate this tub.

Footprint and Portability

With dimensions measuring 61 inches long by 32 inches wide by 28 inches tall, this tub is more compact than many non-inflatable tubs on the market. We give it 5 out of 5 stars for its footprint and portability, especially since it can be deflated for easier transportation and storage. As long as you can inflate it somewhere near a garden hose, you’ll have no issues using this tub nearly anywhere.

Our tester, Nicole Davis, CPT, PN1-NC, notes, however, that it may be too small for some users, saying, “This tub is wide but short, so you won’t be reclining a ton if you’re tall.”

Durability and Construction

For durability and construction, the Plunge Air earns a 3.75 out of 5. It can be difficult to find an inflatable tub as durable as a solid profile, but this is definitely one of the more resilient options we’ve tested, nonetheless. It’s made from warp-knit drop stitch material, which enhances the durability and integrity over other common textiles. 

“It bows a little bit in the middle when filled with water, whereas other inflatable options aren’t doing that,” says Nicole. “However, in talking to our assembly team, they agree that this is the most durable of the inflatable tubs we have. The seams are strong, it doesn’t require re-inflating a few times a week, and the hoses are also of better quality.”

The Plunge Air is also insulated and UV-resistant, helping it maintain low water temperatures even if it’s used outside on a hot summer day. It also includes an inflatable lid that can help keep the plunge cool and free from debris. 

Ergonomics

The Plunge Air earns 3 out of 5 stars for ergonomics. While a cold plunge is never truly comfortable thanks to the frigid waters, certain tubs can feature more appealing silhouettes, allowing users to comfortably lie down (or sit vertically). 

With a compact footprint, the Plunge Air sacrifices a bit on interior dimensions. While it’s not as compact as something like an Ice Barrel and still provides a great cold plunge experience, it’s a little small.

It should fit most users, but you won’t be able to comfortably stretch your legs and recline, especially if you’re a taller user. The angled back allows you to lean back slightly, but you won’t have too much leg room. We think most users should have no problem fitting in the plunge, as long as you don’t mind folding your legs, but it’s not the longest tub we’ve tested.

Conveniences

For conveniences and technology, we give the Plunge Air 5 out of 5 stars. The tub itself is pretty basic, but you can choose to purchase either the pro or standard chiller, which allows you to control the plunge with your phone via the Plunge app. There’s no built-in cell phone holder, but you can purchase a phone or tablet mount directly from Plunge or third-party retailers like Amazon.

Both the pro and standard chillers have built-in filtration systems to keep your water clean, too. The standard version has a 20-micron filter, while the pro chiller uses ozone sanitation. You can also purchase an optional heater that turns your plunge into a hot tub, with temperatures reaching up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can always skip the chiller to save money and use your own ice, but this can begin to get costly after just a few trips to the store for bags of ice. If you can afford it, we often recommend a chiller unit for more convenience and less upkeep.

The Sun Home Cold Plunge was described by our expert product testers as “the most durable inflatable tub” they’ve seen. It can be used with hot or cold water and sets up easily.

What our tester says:

“We have had multiple people in and out of the tub, kept water in it for over two weeks, and have had no issues with the tub keepings it shape. When I compare the outer shell of this inflatable tub to others we have received, I’d place money on this one lasting the longest.”

If you’re shopping for an inflatable cold plunge, the Sun Home Cold Plunge can be another good option worth consider, especially for those who want something with more room to stretch out. 

Similar to the Plunge Air, the Sun Home profile is a horizontally oriented inflatable tub that’s durable and compatible with a separate chiller unit. However, it’s significantly larger measuring 74.8 inches long by 27.6 inches wide. Its horizontal design can provide a more spacious experience for taller individuals, and Sun Home claims that it can fit users up to 6 feet, 8 inches tall. 

While you can’t go wrong with either plunge, we think the Plunge Air is best for most home users due to its affordable pricing and smaller footprint. That said, taller individuals who want more room to spread out and submerge their limbs may prefer the Sun Home Cold Plunge instead.

We give Plunge 5 out of 5 stars for customer service. The 100% US-based customer support is easy to reach via phone, email, or contact form, and if you’re not sure which Plunge to order, you can set up a call with the sales team to discuss the various options.

One notable callout is the warranty, which earns a 3 out of 5. Plunge offers a one-year limited warranty, which is average, but not great. An additional three-year protection plan can be purchased for $222 at the time of writing, but it would be nice to see this included with every purchase. 

Delivery and Setup

For delivery and setup, the Plunge Air earns 4 out of 5 stars. Pete Nastasi says he was able to get this set up at his home fairly quickly, and we’ve found that inflatable tubs are often much easier to install than traditional cold plunges. 

We didn’t time the assembly outright, but Plunge claims it’s a quick 15-minute home setup process, which seems accurate based on our experience with other inflatable tubs. The actual inflation and filling process may take longer, but it shouldn’t take too long to get started.

While it has a high price tag, it’s one of the most durable inflatable tubs we’ve tested and we feel it’s worth the extra cash for those looking to regularly enjoy the health benefits of using a cold plunge. As long as you don’t need the most spacious interior dimensions for your scheduled soaks, this can be a great choice for any home gym owner.

Earning a spot on our best portable saunas list, the SaunaBox SmartSteam Kit Pro is a budget-friendly wet sauna that offers sufficient space for one person to sit comfortably. Similar to a pop-up tent, you can quickly set up this compact model in roughly 10 minutes—a far cry from the assembly time (and manpower) required for something like the Redwood Outdoors Sauna.

The SmartSteam Pro can reach a max temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit with near 100% humidity. This can create an intense, steamy sauna experience that rivals that of dry saunas, which can typically reach much higher temperatures. SaunaBox offers several add-ons for this profile, too, including an all-natural sauna cleaning kit, a dual purpose fan, and Eucalyptus essential oils for adding an aromatic touch. 

Before You Buy

• While the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro has an MSRP of $449, you should be able to find it on sale for much cheaper. We’ve seen it available for as low as $320, or roughly the same cost as some of the best Olympic barbells.
• If you have room in your budget, you can opt for the SmartSteam Pro with Red-Light Therapy for $100 more. This package includes a 660- to 850-nanometer medical-grade red light therapy wand that easily attaches to the frame via included clips. • You can use this sauna both indoors and outdoors. However, SaunaBox recommends covering it with a canopy, balcony, or tarp if you leave it outdoors since it is not weatherproof. 
• SaunaBox covers this sauna with a one-year warranty. Although we’d like to see more extensive coverage, this is fair given the budget-friendly price point. Keep in mind, too, that you can only return the SmartSteam Pro if it’s unused and in its original packaging.

Is the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro Worth It?

At its sub-$500 price point, the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro isn’t trying to compete with more robust models that cost 10 times that amount (or more). Instead, this portable steam sauna can provide excellent value for budget-conscious buyers who may not be ready to pull the trigger on a more expensive option. What you get is, essentially, a personal steam room that reaches peak temperatures quickly thanks to the included heating unit. 

That said, there are trade-offs to consider. First, the SmartSteam Pro only fits one person—if you need room for a partner or multiple people, this is not the right fit. In addition, the humid environment created by the steamer means you have to be extra diligent about drying, cleaning, and managing built-up condensation. Otherwise, you’re inviting bacteria to fester inside the unit.

If the SmartSteam Pro is too small for your liking, you could also look at the SaunaBox SmartSteam XL (formerly known as the SaunaBox Go). This two-person model works in a similar fashion and is compatible with the SaunaBox mobile app on both iOS and Android platforms. If you’re not a fan of steam-based heaters, you could opt for the SaunaBox Pulse PRO—an infrared sauna with integrated red light therapy.

Using the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro

GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, took on testing duties for the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro. Intimately familiar with all types of saunas, she was highly impressed by the build quality, quick setup, and performance of this one-person steam sauna. Let’s peel back the curtain (or unzip the tent, in this case) and see what you can expect from the SmartSteam Pro. 

Construction and Durability 

Earning a 4-out-of-5 rating for construction and durability, the SmartSteam Pro checks many of the boxes we like to see from a safety standpoint. First, it’s certified by Simple Lab for no micro-plastics, which is especially important when you’re dealing with high temperatures. The heat-insulated ThermoShield tent is also constructed with non-toxic, durable materials including polyester and a cotton blend. The tent does a great job of keeping the heat and humidity trapped. 

“If you’re using it and getting overly dizzy or overly hot, there’s a Velcro window for ventilation, as well as the zippered door that you can go ahead and open for more airflow,” Lindsay says. 

The steaming unit carries 3.6 liters of water and features a stainless steel steam chamber with all BPA-free components. Meanwhile, the rust-proof fiberglass frame is surprisingly sturdy for a portable sauna. The SmartSteam Pro also comes with an absorbent floor mat—a huge plus since you’re bound to sweat quite a bit. Overall, we appreciate that SaunaBox built this unit with safety in mind from both a materials and design standpoint.

One important note, though, is that the tent is not machine-washable. Instead, SaunaBox recommends airing out the unit and wiping it down with a microfiber cloth to prevent any bacteria, mildew, or mold build-up after every session.

Delivery and Setup

The SmartSteam Pro scored a perfect 5 out of 5 for delivery and setup, and it’s easy to see why. 

“It should take you less than 10 minutes to set up, and then again about 10 minutes to disassemble after you’ve made sure you’ve cleaned it thoroughly,” Lindsay says. 

SaunaBox likens the setup to putting up a small camping tent. Based on our experience, we’d agree that it’s quite similar. The SmartSteam Pro also comes with a portable carrying case, making it easy to bring this sauna on a trip. 

“The fact it can fit into, essentially, a small carrying bag is a huge plus,” Lindsay adds. 

Heat Performance  

Earning a rock-solid 4-out-of-5 rating for heat performance, the SmartSteam Pro has a listed max temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. While that may not seem like much compared to other saunas, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. 

“You are experiencing almost 100% humidity with this sauna, which just elevates the field temperature so much more,” Lindsay explains. 

The SmartSteam Pro has seven heat levels and a timer that can be set from zero to 60 minutes. Simply pour distilled water into the SmartSteam chamber and wait about 15 minutes for steam to flow into the tent. Because of the high humidity, it wouldn’t be wise to do a 60-minute session. Instead, follow the advice of GGR chief medical advisor Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM.

“Keep sauna sessions between 15 and 20 minutes and pay attention to how you’re feeling,” he explains. “Stay hydrated before, during, and after, and avoid going in on an empty stomach or right after intense exercise. If you start to feel dizzy or overheated, step out and cool down—it’s not worth pushing it.” 

Features and Extras

Given its budget-friendly price tag, you probably wouldn’t expect the SmartSteam Pro to include many notable features or extras. Fortunately, SaunaBox provides great value by including everything you need to enjoy a comfortable, effective home sauna experience. In addition to the insulated pop-up tent, you get:

With the ability to collapse into a carry bag, and weighing around 80 pounds total, it is easy to load into a car for traveling. With a weatherproof insulated exterior, the Sweat Tent can reach 200 degrees in any weather with its wood-fired stove.

If you’re on the hunt for a portable sauna solution, the SmartSteam Pro and SweatTent are two high-quality options. However, they take very different approaches. On one hand, the SmartSteam Pro is a steam-based tent system powered by a steamer unit. Meanwhile, the SweatTent is a wood-fueled, insulated tent that offers much higher dry/steam temperatures. 

From a convenience standpoint, the SmartSteam Pro is lighter, easier to set up, and more suited to indoor or controlled environments. Meanwhile, the SweatTent offers a more “authentic” sauna experience by reaching up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is what you’ll see from most traditional saunas. It’s made from high-quality, heat-resistant Oxford 210D nylon—a material used for backpack liners, sleeping bags, and umbrellas. However, the SweatTent is not rated for indoor use given its wood-fired heat source.

“It’s super sturdy and it comes with a fiberglass roof cover to protect against rain and direct sunlight,” GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele says about the SweatTent.

Customer Experience 

When Lindsay first reviewed this unit, it came with a two-year warranty. However, it’s a bit disappointing that SaunaBox only provides one year of coverage these days. It’s also worth noting that you can only return the SmartSteam Pro if it’s unused and in its original packaging. 

Several reviews on the company website call out difficulties dealing with customer service, as well. In fact, that was a point Lindsay raised in her own review. 

“Make sure going into your purchase that you know that if there are any issues that arrive, you might be forced to deal with the less-than-ideal customer service,” she says. 

If you need to contact SaunaBox, there is a chat feature on the website, as well as a form to submit an inquiry. Overall, though, this doesn’t seem like the most helpful company in terms of customer service availability.

Ordering the SaunaBox SmartSteam Pro

You can order the SmartSteam Pro directly on the SaunaBox website. The process is simple: Choose which package you want (the Pro, Pro with Red Light Therapy, or the two-person SaunaBox XL) and add it to your cart. You can also select from add-ons like Eucalyptus essential oils, a sauna cleaning kit, or a dual-purpose fan.  

Once you’re ready to check out, you have multiple payment options, including PayPal, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, and Venmo. You can also set up monthly payment plans via Klarna. Our tester, Lindsay Scheele, CPT, CNC, was impressed with her experience, especially for a budget-friendly sauna. It heats up quickly, and while it’s not a traditional sauna box that you step into, it covers most of your body.

The unique design requires users to sit in a chair and zip themselves up in the sauna, almost like using a small tent. Your head remains exposed, and you can leave your arms out, too, if you want to do something with your hands while you break a sweat. 

“Honestly, it looks so goofy, but I kind of liked it,” says Lindsay. “I was sitting in a ‘comfortable’ chair and was able to look at my phone thanks to the arm pockets, which made the time pass much more quickly.”

Sauna users accustomed to larger, traditional saunas, where they can stretch out and get comfortable, may not enjoy the smaller size. However, if you’re simply looking for the benefits of using an infrared sauna at a fraction of the price, we think this is a great deal. 

Footprint

This portable sauna earns 4 out of 5 stars for its footprint. With dimensions of 27.6 inches long by 31.5 inches wide by 37.8 inches tall, you don’t need much space to use this, and it’s easy to stow away when you’re done with it. 

Unlike traditional saunas, which are typically large, bulky, and difficult to move, we appreciate the smaller footprint. This is an excellent choice for anyone tight on space, or who doesn’t want a sauna the size of a small shed permanently on display in their yard. 

Durability and Construction

Our tester gave this 5 out of 5 stars for durability and construction, which is a high score for such an affordable unit. The exterior is made of a durable cotton fabric, and the interior is lined with waterproof fabric to prevent excessive sweat absorption. 

While Smartmak includes a foldable chair, Lindsay noted that it’s a little small. 

“This was comfortable for me, especially after trying some very uncomfortable wooden sauna seats. However, I’m only 5’4” and around 130 pounds,” she explains. “I could see someone bigger than myself feeling like the seat is too small.”

This doesn’t impact the durability of the sauna itself, and you can always come up with a DIY solution using your own chair, but we wanted to point this out.

This one-person infrared sauna provides more than you’d expect at this price point, and earns 4 out of 5 stars for features and extras. 

There’s a convenient remote that you can use to control the temperature, and the exterior of the sauna has a storage pocket that’s easy to reach. This makes it easy to adjust your settings without having to unzip yourself and climb out of the sauna. 

It also comes with a heating foot pad, allowing you to warm the bottom of your feet while you relax.

Heat Performance

For heat performance, we’re looking at how quickly a sauna reaches its maximum temperature, as well as how well it holds that temperature. Once again, the Smartmak punches above its weight class here and earns a 4-out-of-5-star rating. 

Lindsay said the sauna took about 20 minutes to reach its maximum temperature, which she says is close to the industry standard, and even a bit faster than other high-end saunas she’s used in the past. 

She added, “Even when I had my arms out of the sauna, using the arm pockets, the temperature didn’t drop! It was able to maintain the desired heat the whole time.”

However, it’s more affordable than popular premium models like the Sun Home Pro or Plunge, which cost $14,499 and $6,990, respectively. 

That said, there are trade-offs to consider. The chiller may produce less noise, but the ¼-HP motor is less powerful than what we see on other tubs. As a result, it takes longer to reach low temperatures initially. There’s also no option for hot-and-cold versatility, which may be something to consider if you also wanted to use it as a hot tub. Still, if your priority is a dedicated cold plunge tub that checks the boxes for aesthetics and performance without breaking the bank, the Modtub 2.0 is a compelling option that offers rock-solid value.

GGR Everything lead reviewer Lindsay Scheele is a bit of a cold plunge savant, having sat through many bone-chilling sessions in an effort to recover quicker and help us identify the top models on the market. GGRE YouTube channel subscribers may have already seen her in-depth Modtub 2.0 review, but for those who haven’t had a chance, let’s explore what her experience was like. 

Construction and Durability

Just from the eyeball test, the Modtub 2.0 looks like a rugged, durable cold plunge tub. And we’re happy to report that it doesn’t just look the part—it is built to last thanks to a rotomolded shell, foam-injected walls, and upgraded lid. Even though the chiller is less powerful than we see on other models, this tub is designed to retain its temperature. 

“It’s completely insulated—it’s going to keep your water at the temperature that you have it set at,” Lindsay explains. “I could feel the cold water coming off as I opened up the lid.” 

We also appreciate the aesthetics of this tub. Lindsay points out that the whole system is located in the back, meaning you don’t see any “ugly hose cables popping out.” Also, it’s nice to be able to choose from multiple colors to suit your preferences. Overall, we rate the construction and durability at a perfect 5 out of 5.

Footprint and Portability

With its clever design, the Modtub 2.0 strikes a balance between substantial size and surprising portability. Despite being a fairly spacious tub when filled, the dry weight is just 95 pounds, which makes it “honestly really easy to move,” according to Lindsay. Once filled, it weighs around 850 pounds, so choose your final placement carefully.

Modtub added to the portability by including molded side grips that Lindsay describes as “almost like indented handlebars on the side.” This makes grabbing the tub and picking it up much easier. Its compact footprint also allows it to fit in home gyms, patios, or garages, with Lindsay recommending “around 12 inches of space from the wall to your cold tub to ensure proper ventilation” if placed indoors or under a covered patio. Overall, we rate the footprint and portability at a respectable 4 out of 5.

Features 

The Modtub 2.0 is equipped with several safety features. The lockable lid earned Lindsay’s stamp of approval, as she noted it’s great for keeping children and animals safe if the tub is outdoors. The system also includes dual drain ports for convenience. 

“Both sides of the tub have a drain port. So, if you want to go ahead and drain it, move it around, it’s actually really quick and easy to do that,” Lindsay explains.

The Modtub 2.0 also includes a 50-micron pleated filter to keep the water clean. Plus, you can purchase an ozone sanitation kit for $300, which we recommend doing.

“I would do that because it just ensures that your water is staying optimally clean,” Lindsay explains. 

As mentioned earlier, this unit comes with a ¼-HP chiller. On one hand, that means it will take longer for your water to reach the coldest temperature. On the other hand, it means you don’t have to worry about noise. 

“It’s going to be so much quieter,” Lindsay says. “If you keep this closer to your house, you barely hear it when you’re using it.” 

Performance

Even with its smaller, less-powerful chiller, the Modtub 2.0 delivers impressive results. Lindsay notes that “the water can go ahead and get down to 39° F” and praises how well it maintains the temperature thanks to the thick foam insulation. The chiller cycles intelligently, turning off once it reaches the desired temperature. 

“It’ll actually shut off the chiller once it reaches that 39° F temperature, and then once it hits around 41 or 42 degrees, it’ll kick back on,” Lindsay explains. “So, it’s not going to overfreeze. It’s not going to waste energy.”

The chilling process is gradual but steady, cooling about 3 to 5° F every hour in order to reach that 39° F benchmark. From an energy cost perspective, the Modtub 2.0 is relatively efficient, even in hot climates. 

“They ran the cold tub in the chiller all the way through the summer Texas heat and it ended up being about $26 a month in extra energy cost,” Lindsay notes. 

Overall, this won’t reach freezing temperatures like some more powerful models, but the chiller does its job and so does the tub’s thick insulation.

The Desert Plunge Grizzly Wide 450 Cold Tub is the most direct comparison to the Modtub 2.0, as it falls in the same price range and has almost the exact same aesthetic and functionality. Both models are built for cold water therapy and share similar features like insulated walls, integrated chillers, and filtration and sanitation systems. They also share a nearly identical rugged look that reminds you of an oversized cooler.

However, there are a few notable differences between these two value-packed cold plunge tubs. The Modtub 2.0 offers a larger water capacity (122 gallons compared to 112 gallons) and slightly longer interior tub. However, the Desert Cold Plunge Tub is wider on the interior by roughly 3.5 inches. Both manufacturers provide a standard one-year warranty with extension options.

Customer Experience 

Unfortunately, Modtub does not allow returns—which isn’t something we see often. In addition, this tub is only covered by a one-year warranty. 

“This is not the best warranty that we’ve seen,” Lindsay says. “Nordic Wave has a five-year warranty. Sun Home Saunas has a three-year warranty. A one-year warranty is pretty small.”

That said, Modtub offers multiple extended warranty options, which can give you peace of mind and protection if you decide to go all-in on the Modtub 2.0. We also appreciate that there are financing options available that can help make this $3,000 purchase more palatable. 

If you have questions or need to get in touch with customer service, you must fill out an online form. You can also schedule a call with a team member representative by booking an appointment via the company website. This is fairly unique, as most companies have dedicated hours in which you can call customer service directly. 

Ordering the Modtub 2.0 Cold Plunge Tub

You can order the Modtub 2.0 Cold Plunge Tub directly on the company website. First, you’ll have to select a finish option. You’ll also have a chance to add a one- or two-year extended warranty for $159 or $279, respectively. Or, you can simply go with the standard one-year warranty for no additional cost. 

Modtub offers payment plans through ShopPay. Keep in mind that you can cancel your order up until it ships. However, you will have to pay a 10% cancellation fee. Shipping takes five business days, and your tub will be delivered on a pallet curbside at your residence. Ultimately, you will be responsible for moving it to your desired location. For that reason, I recommend having at least one or two people around to help during the unboxing process.

A Quick Look at the Theragun Sense

Localized vibrations from percussive massage guns can help increase blood flows to sore muscle groups and possibly aid with recovery and pain, as seen in a 2023 study¹. Therabody made its mark in the recovery landscape with the Theragun, but has branched out beyond massage therapy to red light therapy, muscle stimulation, and more. 

Along with the new health and wellness avenues, Therabody continues to expand its line of massage guns, with options like the Theragun Relief, the Theragun Prime, and the Theragun Mini—a compact mini massage gun.

Shaped with a triangle handle for an easy grip at multiple angles, the Sense has an amplitude of 12 millimeters and 30 pounds of stall force, which isn’t as powerful as the Theragun PRO, but is still enough to alleviate some muscle soreness. There are four attachment heads, which adjust how localized your massage is.

To differentiate itself from the more budget-friendly Theragun Relief, the Sense has some added perks. Both have Bluetooth connection to the Therabody app, but the guided massage routines are actually displayed on the Sense’s LCD screen. Additionally, the massage gun has a biometric sensor which can read your heart rate, increasing the gun’s functionality—and cost.

Before You Buy

• The Theragun Sense is listed with the Relief as providing a “full-body gentle massage.” For a more deep-tissue massage, you’ll want the Theragun PRO or Prime (the Theragun PRO Plus and Theragun Prime Plus include heating therapy, too).
• HSA and FSA funds are accepted for the Theragun Sense, as well as many other products offered by Therabody.
• The Coach feature within the Therabody app can connect to your fitness tracker to create free personalized and science-backed recovery plans, including massage routines and breathing exercises.

Is the Theragun Sense Worth It?

At nearly $300, the Theragun Sense is certainly a pricier massage gun, especially considering its lackluster one-year warranty. Nevertheless, it’s packed with features which will make it worth the price for those looking for this level of functionality.

Our product tester Kayla Godfrey rates the value at 4 out of 5, explaining, “I think the extensive features—the LCD screen, carrying case, biometric sensor, and multiple speeds and attachments—all packed within a sleek design make this massage gun have great quality and value.”

As long as you can look past the short warranty, this is a nice massage gun for many folks, although it likely won’t suit those on a budget or people seeking greater amplitude or power.

Using the Theragun Sense

The Theragun Sense was tested over the span of several weeks by our product tester and GGR team member Kayla Godfrey. “Most sessions I would use the Sense around five minutes for a targeted body part, but if I was very sore, I’d do a more general massage and spend closer to 10 or 15 minutes,” Kayla says.

She appreciated the five speed settings of the massage gun, but admits she often found herself on the highest speed of 2,400 percussions per minute (PPM). “I was on the highest setting most of the time,” Kayla recalls, “but if there was a really painful or sensitive area, I would turn it down to a lower speed.”

Kayla also notes the level of pressure and comfort did change by which attachment she was using. Theragun Sense comes with four attachment heads:

You do have the option to purchase additional attachments for the massage gun, like the cone or super-soft attachments. “Each attachment is made of high-quality polyurethane and silicone, which makes for a comfortable attachment that’s also water-resistant,” Kayla adds. She rates the attachments at 4 out of 5.

Using the Therabody App

The visualized routines through the Sense’s LCD screen is one of the biggest draws of this particular massage gun. However, Kayla admittedly didn’t use the app much. So to get a sense of the app, I went ahead and downloaded the app and connected it to my Theragun PRO. 

The workout app is simple to set up and connect to your massage gun; you can connect it to just about any Theragun on the market through Bluetooth. Once you’re set up, you can browse through Therabody’s library of guided massage work, for a variety of needs and uses:

• Relaxation
• Warm-ups
• Post-workout
• Working on specific muscle groups
• Addressing issues like back pain

Routines are literally step-by-step and easy to follow. With the added LCD screen, the Theragun Sense is even easier to follow, since all the information is directly on the massage gun once you get started.

A review from 2023² concluded that massage guns are effective in improving recovery as well as flexibility and short-term range of motion, but ineffective in helping with strength, agility, or explosive movements. Using the app can be a boon to those who want to optimize their recovery and prep for workouts, but athletes who already have a protocol that works for them probably won’t find as much use for the app (or the Sense’s screen).

Amplitude and Stall Force

Amplitude is a measurement of how deep percussion travels into soft tissue while using a massage gun. Higher amplitudes tend to reach 16 millimeters, which is a depth suitable for deep-tissue massaging; it also happens to be what many of Therabody’s higher-end massage guns reach.

The Theragun Sense’s amplitude is less at 12 millimeters. While we rate the amplitude at 3.5 out of 5, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a worse massage gun—it’s simply a different amplitude, rated more for gentle massaging. With its 30 pounds of stall force as well, it’s sure to still treat sore muscles. Kayla adds, “Usually, I’ll get pretty sore a couple days after working out. The Theragun Sense was a great way to help keep my muscles loose while I recovered.”

Battery Life

With up to two hours of battery life on a single charge, the Theragun Sense will last for several sessions, considering you’ll use it for just a few minutes at a time. Still, this is a shorter battery span compared to other massage units available, so it earns a 3 out of 5 for its battery life.

The Theragun Sense also comes with a USB-C charging cable, but you’ll need your own adapter to plug it into your outlet.

Portability

I myself own the Theragun PRO, and can say that the massage gun and carrying case are pretty hefty and not easily portable. The Sense is made to be much more compact, however, with a simple neoprene carrying pouch. The massage gun itself is also lightweight, weighing under two pounds.

Kayla’s only complaint? “The carrying case doesn’t have any compartments for the attachments or accessories,” she says. “You end up having to toss everything in the bag and zipping it up. I would’ve liked a bit of organization.” She rates the portability at 4.5 out of 5.

Ergonomics

Most Theraguns have a patented triangular shape and handle, making for a comfortable grip, even when you’re reaching for hard-to-reach spots like your upper or lower back. The Theragun Sense is no different with the classic triangle and a very comfortable grip according to Kayla.

“I like the compact design; it’s very comfortable to hold,” she says. “The triangular shape of the handle allows you to hold it in different ways to get the right angle to access different parts of your body.” She gives the ergonomics a 5-out-of-5 score and notes that the handle’s texture isn’t slippery at all, either.

With both massage guns having similar builds and prices, it may be difficult to distinguish the Theragun Sense from the Theragun Prime at a first glance, but there are a couple of stark differences. Sure, both have five built-in massage speeds and four attachment heads included, but each still has unique features.

Both the Sense and Prime can connect to the Therabody app to do step-by-step massage routines and to practice breathwork; however, only the Sense has an LCD screen that will display the routine on the massage gun. The Prime has a more primitive screen, and displays the power and speed settings by bars.

So why is the Theragun Prime priced $20 higher than the Sense? The largest difference is in the amplitude, or how deep the percussion can penetrate tissue. With 16 millimeters of amplitude, the Theragun Prime is powerful enough for deep-tissue massage, while the Theragun Sense can reach 12 millimeters, making it better for gentle massages.

The Bob and Brad D6 Pro delivers a lot of power in a massage gun. It could produce up to 85 pounds of stall force and an amplitude of 16 millimeters. With that sort of amplitude, it can get deep into soft tissue and muscles to help alleviate muscle soreness and jumpstart recovery. It also comes with seven attachments and a 3-hour battery life.

What our tester says:

“This thing is the most powerful massage gun I’ve used by far, and I own several at this point.”

Many people search for Theragun alternatives, and the Bob and Brad D6 Pro is one we often recommend if you’re searching for something different. Coming in at $40 less than the Sense, the D6 Pro comes packed with accessories—seven attachment heads—and a longer-lasting battery of three hours.

Compared to the Theragun Sense, it’s extremely powerful as well with an amplitude of 16 millimeters for deep-tissue work and a stall force of 85 pounds. Stall force is how much pressure you must put on the massage gun head for the motor to stop or stall …so 85 pounds is a lot of pressure.

The D6 Pro might be too much for some people, which would make the Theragun Sense a better option. The 12 millimeters of amplitude can be a more pleasant experience and a more gentle massage than the powerful D6 Pro. However, athletes looking for a deeper or more aggressive massage for their muscle recovery will likely get more from the Bob and Brad D6 Pro.

Customer Experience 

Therabody has a pretty solid return policy that spans 30 days after receiving your product. The brand will cover standard return shipping costs so long as the items are returned in “like new” condition with all original packaging and accessories.

That said, Therabody has a 1-year limited warranty covering its Theragun line, including the Theragun Sense. While 1-year warranties are pretty standard for massage guns, I’d like to see multi-year warranties start becoming the norm for pricier massage guns like the Sense. (Some have already, like the Ekrin Athletics BANTAM, which has a lifetime warranty.)

You can contact Therabody through email or a contact form on its website. Therabody says it will reply back to messages within 24 to 48 hours, during its business hours of Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

The Theragun Sense can be ordered directly from Therabody’s website, and you can also find it available from some online retailers like Amazon or Best Buy. Therabody offers free shipping on orders over $99—which the Sense would easily qualify for—so Prime members won’t necessarily save on shipping costs, although you may find a price cut every now and then. 

Financing options are available through Afterpay, and the Theragun Sense is also HSA- and FSA-eligible.

GGR product tester Kayla Godfrey ordered the Sense from the website and received the massage gun promptly two days later. The Sense comes fully assembled: Just add your attachment head. “The Theragun Sense came beautifully boxed and undamaged,” Kayla notes. “Unboxing it felt like a very luxurious experience.”

Customer Reviews

As of this writing, the Theragun Sense has an average customer rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars, both on Therabody’s website and on Amazon. With the majority of ratings being 5-star reviews, many customers were pleased with the quality build of the Sense, as well as the guided routines provided in the app and shown on the Sense’s LCD screen.

Criticisms on the Theragun Sense revolved mostly around the massage gun’s value. Some felt it was overpriced, either because it’s underpowered compared to other models, or because the app integration wasn’t as important to them. Older reviews complained that the model would come with no charge and the inability to be charged, but that issue seems to have been rectified.

It appears that the amount of value customers will get from the Sense depends on whether or not you’ll use the app and smart capabilities of the massage gun. If you’re not planning to use these features, there are cheaper or more powerful options available.

The Theragun Sense is a powerful muscle recovery tool for those needing a bit of guidance in their massage routine. However, those who aren’t needing guidance for their recovery probably won’t need the smart capabilities of this massage gun. For those folks, there are less expensive and more powerful massage guns available.

No stranger to breaking a sweat in the name of finding the best home saunas, GGR Everything Lead Reviewer Lindsay Scheele took on testing duties for this Caldera review. She was highly impressed by the build quality, ease of assembly, and performance of this two-person infrared sauna from Relaxe. Let’s take a closer look at key areas so you get a complete picture of the Caldera. 

Construction, Footprint, and Portability 

Earning a perfect score of 5 out of 5 for construction, the Caldera is made completely from Canadian hemlock—a wood frequently used with infrared saunas because it creates a “calming experience” due to its low odor, according to Lindsay. 

While cedar wood is also a popular choice, it can be particularly hot to the touch. Plus, some people don’t enjoy the strong aroma of cedar wood. With the Caldera, you don’t have to worry about any of those issues. 

“When you sit down, you are going to sweat, but the wood itself does not feel hot,” Lindsay explains. “Plus, it’s very good at keeping bacteria away.”

Measuring 47 inches long, 43 inches wide, and 75 inches high, the Caldera has almost identical dimensions to the Heavenly Heat Far Infrared 2-Person Sauna, which earned our nod as the best two-person infrared sauna. Lindsay points out that the Caldera also has a few user-friendly ergonomic features, including a cup holder, a grooved wooden storage area for your phone, a towel rack, and a shelf. 

“It has one of the most comfortable benches I’ve ever tested,” she states. “It has a nice slant-back design where two people can easily fit comfortably.” 

Unfortunately, this is not an outdoor sauna. You can keep it in your garage (as long as it’s well-covered), but it is not built to be exposed to any outside elements. Tipping the scales at 340 pounds, it’s also not particularly portable. Overall, we rate the footprint and portability at 3.5 out of 5. While we appreciate the Caldera’s compact footprint, we docked some points due to its lack of portability.

Features 

The Caldera isn’t the most decked-out sauna we’ve seen, but it certainly has quite a few features worth mentioning. First, the detachable red light therapy panel emits between 660- to 880-nanometer (nm) wavelengths of red light. That’s right on par with what we like to see with red light therapy devices based on the research surrounding the most effective wavelength ranges³.

“You want to sit right between about 600 and 1,000, so this really hits the mark,” Lindsay explains. “Having the addition of red light therapy without any extra cost is excellent at this price point.” 

In addition, this sauna boasts infrared technology with nine carbon heaters. The heaters are placed around the side panels as well as on the ground and underneath the bench. 

“You are really feeling heat from every direction,” Lindsay explains. 

Two other distinct features on the Caldera include a Himalayan salt bar on the back and chromotherapy lighting. While some of the health claims⁴ about Himalayan salt can be controversial, Lindsay highlights that it may help clear mucus, reduce inflammation in your airways, and create a calming environment. 

Meanwhile, the Caldera has four LED light strips with seven static colors and a dynamic lighting mode that may support mental well-being and stress relief. Just like the Himalayan salt bar, this isn’t the primary reason to invest in this sauna, but it’s a nice bonus. 

Overall, we give the Caldera a rock-solid 4-out-of-5 score for features.

Performance

With a 4 out of 5 for performance, the Caldera came up a little short of a perfect score. As mentioned earlier, this sauna doesn’t offer quite as robust a temperature range as other models we’ve tested. Still, you can absolutely work up a good sweat.

Capable of reaching 149 degrees Fahrenheit, the Caldera has a timer that goes up to 60 minutes. Be prepared to wait about 30 minutes for it to reach the max temperature, though. 

“Most people’s sauna sessions will range from about 20 to 30 minutes, so I think 30 minutes is the perfect amount of time,” Lindsay says. 

One callout she has is that the control panel isn’t the easiest to navigate. Lindsay warns that you have to hold down the button until it starts beeping before you adjust the lighting, temperature, or sound control on the built-in speakers. 

“It’s not the most user-friendly sauna LED screen I’ve ever used,” she says. 

Still, the Caldera earned a firm stamp of approval from one of our most seasoned product testers. 

“Between the salt, the red light, the infrared, and the fact the chromotherapy lighting is uniquely done with these starlight-like features at the top, I thought it was just a very fun sauna to use,” Lindsay says.
